The statistics of the non-player characters are given in the Aurea format. The abbreviations have the following meaning: STR=strength, DEX=dexterity, CON=constitution, PSP=physical speed, SIZ=size, CML=comeliness, WILL=willpower, I=intelligence, MNT=mental fitness, MSP=mental speed, LRN=learning, RSP=reaction speed, SGH=sight, HEAR=hearing, TST=taste, SML=smell, TCH=touch, INT=intuition.

It should be noted that in China the surname - here printed in strong capitals - precedes the personal name.

DEE Jen-djieh
The magistrate of Kao-Yang a town district in Kiangsu Province. Referred to as 'Judge Dee' or 'the Judge'
HOONG Liang
Judge Dee's trusted adviser and Sergeant of the tribunal. Referred to as 'Sergeant Hoong' or 'the Sergeant'.
MA Joong
A reformed 'brother of the greed wood'; now a trusted lieutenant of the Judge.
CHIAO Tai
A reformed 'brother of the green wood'; now a trusted lieutenant of the Judge.
TAO Gan
A reformed gambler and trickster; now a trusted lieutenant of the Judge.
