I'm really, really glad
That I am a Linux user. I would probably be just as happy as a BSD user or an OpenSolaris user -- and I'm really glad that I'm not really a Windows Vista user. I used to keep a Vista partition around to test Corel Painter X with (because Corel Painter doesn't install under Wine), but seldom boot Vista.
So, when I last booted into Vista, it had an enormous backlog of updates to install. Which I foolishly allowed it to do. The result? Something called winload.exe is apparently borked beyond recovery. A quick google shows that it's apparently a know problem. Right... Breaking your basic OS kernel loading during an update, that makes Ubuntu's X11 foul-up look good in comparison! At least with Ubuntu, you can get all the media you like -- my laptop came without installation media, and the recovery thing on the recovery partition seems to want to erase my whole hard disk.
Oh, well -- another 16GB of hard disk available!

Thanks for the warning! I'm keeping my Vista partition around in case the girls are forced to use Windows for school projects again, but I'll refrain from installing updates. It's not as if I'll let Windows on the Internet anyway.

I am very skeptic about installing windows like that... you should try out virtual box, it's way secure... I have set up my dad's laptop, getting rid of his preinstalled vista (he got a virus and he asked me to) and installing kubuntu with kde 4 and windows xp under virtual box just in case (he uses some crappy programs for work that don't quite run under wine as they supposed to, at least for now).

Well I had a really stupid problem that caused Vista to only boot in safe mode. When booting normally it would just hang for about 15-20 minutes at the Welcome screen. Turns out some update problem caused this, as soon as the darn thing managed to install them it worked. And I disabled updates for some time :) .

Yeah... But virtualbox or vmware don't recognize the wacom drivers, so I cannot play with the pressure sensitive brushes in Corel Painter :-(
